Emoticonists on dA (4)

Tue Feb 7, 2012, 5:40 AM
:iconkrissi001:

I asked in a previous Journal that every Emoticonist should write a comment there.
You can still do it on this Journal if you haven't commented yet.
I sent notes to all of those who commented there and asked them a couple of questions.
And now I am going to feature all of this deviants and their answers :dummy:
If you saw that I have featured you and i didn't include all of your answers/or any answers, you could write a Journal and include all of your answers there. ;D

What is your first reaction when you find a new Emoticonist?
My typical reaction is, "I'm going to watch them and see what they come up with. :eager:"

Pick 5 of your most favourite Emoticonists and describe why they are special to you, what makes them stand out from the others?
:stare: You're making me pick favourites? Gawd. Um. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:
stuck-in-suburbia: Not only are her emotes (and stamps) pretty sweet, she's got a good head on her shoulders. She's not afraid to let you know her opinion of things, and she doesn't sugar-coat anything. I find this to be an admirable quality. Aside from her personality, though, what I really love about her is the fact that I can almost always pick out her emotes and know they're hers. Her style is pretty tell-tale, lol

Kyramy: Kyra has improved so much in such a short time, and I'm really impressed with how far she's come since she first began "splicing" emotes (taking two and making them into one, like ). Even her splices were really good, so I'm glad that she's finally coming into some of her full potential. C: FLOVE!

BlissfullySarcastic: She is the queen of MS Paint pixeling. I've been watching her livestreams and taking notes because (since I'm without Photoshop right now) I want to learn how to emote without fancy programs. She's got awesome ideas stored in her head for Peeny and Robobuddy, and I personally think she's a great person in general. C:

Phlum: This young man is awesome, in my books. He took it upon himself (from what I understand) to host and help recreate the "Emoticonist Support Stamp", which must've been a chore in itself. Something that I really like about him is that he's always involved with the community.

EternalxRequiem: While she's been on dA for quite some time, it wasn't until recently that I met this emoticonist. She's got such a great shading style, and her emotes are always lovely to look at. She's also willing to give advice whenever asked, and she's an absolute pleasure to converse with (if you don't mind the occasional LOLcat speak ;P). C:

Is there anything that you want to say to the whole Emoticon community?
Guys...I just flove you. I may not be as active as I was before, but I still flove you so freaking much.

How could we strengthen the connection within the Emoticon community?
Really, the only thing I see that could strengthen the community is if people gave more of themselves. Everyone, whether they're old or new, needs to make the effort to welcome people, to give critique when asked, keep in touch with each other... I mean, how hard is it to click around dA? ;P

What kind of things do you want to see less / more in the Emoticon Gallery?  (miscats excluded :stare:)
Uh...Y'know, I think I'd like to see more Giant emotes. The big ones always make me giddy. XD (SHUSH, I KNOW HOW IT SOUNDS.)

Do you have any words of encouragement for the next Emoticon Community Volunteer? Anything that, you think that, could be important for the next CV?
No matter what, keep confident. It may be rough at times, and people may or may not complain. Just remember, you volunteered for it, which means you wanted to help out the community somehow. Keep a cool head, know when and how to respond, and don't be afraid to ask the community what it wants!

What did you like and what didn't you like in the time when I was the Community Volunteer?
D: What a question! lol I really liked how you tried to get the community involved with each other. It was a valiant effort, and even though I couldn't really participate or help, I really appreciated what you tried to do. :) The only thing I didn't really like was the miscats that flooded the gallery at times, BUT I totally understand why there were so many. You were the sole CV for the Emote Community, and you have a life outside of dA; I can't expect you to sit on the computer 24/7 and keep the gallery clean. Overall, I think you did good. C:

What is your first reaction when you find a new Emoticonist?
I'll go and check their gallery ASAP . see if there's something worth a fave .

Pick 5 of your most favourite Emoticonists and describe why they are special to you, what makes them stand out from the others?
Mirz123: the emote-mom and my biggest supporter .
Web5teR: his talent in backgrounds is undeniable .
Kerubimu: He has a lot of talent and potentials .
Krissi001: The sweetest GM I've met .
CookiemagiK: My idol in emotes .

What kind of things do you want to see less / more in the Emoticon Gallery?  (miscats excluded :stare:)
More loving art

Do you have any words of encouragement for the next Emoticon Community Volunteer? Anything that, you think that, could be important for the next CV?
Do your best ..and don't fear the community reaction . ;)

What did you like and what didn't you like in the time when I was the Community Volunteer?
I like the humble and supporting spirit you showed .but I wished for more emote-DDs to be given .

What is your first reaction when you find a new Emoticonist?
Usually to check out their gallery, see how long they've been playing with pixels, what kinds of things they do. I'll watch them after that more often than not.

Pick 5 of your most favourite Emoticonists and describe why they are special to you, what makes them stand out from the others?
BlissfullySarcastic will always be one of my favourites. She is so talented, and does the cutest things I have ever seen. And uses Paint for most things, which is amazing.

happy-gurl is a new emoticonist who is absolutely fantastic. She just jumped right in, and I love her take on things.

xxghost250xx (whose name I can never remember the numbers for) is also one of my favourites. Her pixel work is gorgeous, and she does things from a different perspective. Like, that polaroid avatar? I wouldn't have thought of that. It's so creative and fun. Like most of her work, actually.

Kyramy is awesome. I love her style. It's very classy, and doesn't try to hard, but it's breathtaking.

Indae is one of the deviants who I am always eager to see something new from. I love her take on different emotions, and her style is so cutesy.

I now object to only being allowed five choices, so I will just let you know that there's always more I can gush about, if you want me to. For now, self-control.

Is there anything that you want to say to the whole Emoticon community?
Just keep trucking. For some reason, the emote community has a typical turnover that's very short compared to other fields. Which is sad. Older emoticonists have made come-backs, which are great. However, emotes as a whole will grow better (?) as an artform if you stick with it and tell that high turnover rate to go... elsewhere. :shifty:

How could we strengthen the connection within the Emoticon community?
Personally, I think people need to not take things so seriously. Take a step back from a situation and ask why someone's doing what they're doing, instead of instantly getting upset. Also, calm conversations work better than emotional outbursts. For some reason, because the community is so small, drama sets fires that could really be avoided. Just a little fire-proofing would help, I think.

What kind of things do you want to see less / more in the Emoticon Gallery?  (miscats excluded :stare:)
I'd like to see more experimentation. Like, a while back, some people took emotes and made them into transformers, or what have you. That kind of manipulation of what an emote is is something I'd like to see more of.

Do you have any words of encouragement for the next Emoticon Community Volunteer? Anything that, you think that, could be important for the next CV?
Words of encouragement, you say? Don't get discouraged. The hardest thing, I would think, is some lack of feedback or participation, depending on the circumstances. Apathy is a bitch. Just don't let it make you its bitch. The next CV has to be open to hearing ideas from the community, and being committed to ensuring that their projects, or contests, or whatever, as accessible to the whole community, not just some of the deviants. You know?

What did you like and what didn't you like in the time when I was the Community Volunteer?
I do like that you kept on top of everything going on in the community, like a sort of hub.
However, there were times when you felt a little distant. Which may have been for a number of factors and isn't a big deal. Just an observation.

If you are new to the Emoticon community:  Do you feel welcomed?  What could be done to make new emoticonists feel welcomed?
I'm quite new I feel kind of welcomed but I would love it if people gave everyone maybe a little badge or something saying "I'm an emoticonist :dummy:"

Hm, cool. Maybe I should check them out...nah, I have HW

Pick 5 of your most favourite Emoticonists and describe why they are special to you, what makes them stand out from the others?
Mirz123 just because she was the first emoticonist I ever watched, and she kinda inspired me to start so yeah

CookiemagiK Because I just think his stuff is so cool ^^

Synfull I love how into the community she is, and how if I ever have any questions, she's one person I can count on to ask

Krissi001 because you are amazing as a CV!!! You try your hardest to do the best for the community, and even though I'm not very involved I defiantly feel your influence

and SparklyDest because I love her font resources and the EMTC has really helped me improve from where I was.

Is there anything that you want to say to the whole Emoticon community?
Hm...recruit newbies into groups, contests, etc. I'm guilty of not talking to others myself, but when I first started this I was kinda trying to swim in strange waters, you know? I think everyone just needs a little boost to get started.

How could we strengthen the connection within the Emoticon community?
Well, I am very bad at involving myself within the community, so I think that it should be a process from both sides. Those who are new might need to make an effort to get involved, so that it is stronger, and those who are veterans should be welcoming to those who come in and help them. Maybe a vet emoticonist could almost "adopt" a new emoticonist and help them along until they can work on their own.

Do you have any words of encouragement for the next Emoticon Community Volunteer? Anything that, you think that, could be important for the next CV?
I wish them good luck because from what I've gathered from my short time here is that this community can be SUPER fickle. I think the new CV needs to be able to involve themselves in the community and be willing to take on the responsibilities of a CV. I also think they should have a lot of patience and be willing to put up with some of the dArama that goes on.

If you haven't been really active in the community, what could be done that you get more active again?
I need to join more groups, watch more emoticonists, make more emotes, and maybe host a few contests. It doesn’t help that I’m shy as hell though lol

If you are new to the Emoticon community:  Do you feel welcomed?  What could be done to make new emoticonists feel welcomed?
I felt somewhat welcomed because I had already talked to a few people in the emote community, but since I might be one of the youngest emoticonists out there (only 13) it was a little hard. I touched on how to make new people feel more welcome in 4, but I think that us newbies should also make an effort, instead of just sitting around and waiting for someone to notice us, something I’m very guilty of.

If you have created a couple Emoticons, but then stopped creating them:  What was the reason that you  stopped to create Emoticons? What could be done that you start to create them again?
I’m kind of slowing down how much art I make now, but that’s because I got bit by the writing bug, I’m working on a big pixel project, and I have a ton of homework. So I just need free time. XD

Did anyone know you were going to post the answers? I only ask because I didn't, and all of these feel like sincere responses as I read them which is very refreshing. Most of the time I think people kind of 'package' their answers when they know a large audience is going to be listening. I look forward to the rest of the articles! :eager:

Perhaps that says something about how I should be careful when I speak. :giggle:
