Comment/critique themed Art challenge?

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 7, 2013, 6:24 AM
I have this idea for a while now and I wanted to know what you think about it:
It will be something for the Emoticon community but everybody else is welcome to share their opinion.

My idea:
I will give you 2 themes (or Art prompts), then you can decided if you want to participate or not.
There will be 3 lists (beginner, advanced, mixed) each deviant will get a number and a randomizer will decided who will work "together".
If you decide to take part you will have to pick one theme/art prompt then you will have 1 month (not sure about that yet) to create the piece, after that you send the link of your deviation to your partner.
Then they have some time to write an in-depth comment for the piece (tell them what you like about the piece, what you don't like, what do you think of their colour choice, how well did they incorporate the theme . etc.) Don't just say it's awesome or I like it, that's not the goal of the challenge.
The goal is to create Art and to write in-depth comments and of course to improve you Art.
I will also write comments/critiques for the pieces.

I thought it would be nice to not just give themes (like "pirates"), I would describe what should be included like "tree-house, balloon and zombie". You would have to decide how you want to draw it. (or I will describe the scene like "Portray a sense of pain with a buried treasure and a mask". From the random art prompt generator :paranoid:)
And everybody can suggest themes/Art prompts.

I had this idea when I found the Random Art Prompt Generator

What do you think about it?

I am new to you, because I found you today from Deviousness.
But I think this idea is great and I will follow you just so I can participate.
And your art is kinda neat to.
Oh and one more thing. I can't realy draw well. Is that a probelm? And what kind of art, can we draw anything or is there a style that must be followed?

Oh Ok then, nevermind. But it would be great if something like that existed for all artists. =)

Sounds interesting. My only thought is how the pairs are created. because there may be cases (like with myself) that the level they would prefer to critique them (intermediate/advanced) is different from the level of person they would prefer to critique (beginner/intermediate).

I wonder if the classes may cause more issue than they are worth. Whilst it would be nice for everyone to get a critique useful to them, that's still not guaranteed even with a class system. I view it a bit like the ESS where people could be randomly paired up. In some cases people may be disappointed that the critique isn't as constructive as it could be (but a second critique could be offered by people who are willing to do more than one to make up for it), but at the same time it could lead to some awesome surprises like a newbie pointing out something really well, or a newbie receiving a really useful critique from an advanced emoticonist they were too scared for a critique from.

You could even run it like the ESS where A critiques B. B critiques C .... Z critiques A etc. The advantage being that you know how many have signed up and dropouts wont be an issue. Also gets around the issue of odd numbers.

Equally I know from the past people can have a hard time classing themselves as they may be a beginner for animation, but intermediate for static etc.

Just a few thoughts. But overall I like the idea :)

I wasn't really sure about it either, that's why I am offering a critique as well.
I also had the idea that I won't announce who will be paired up and they would have to send their pieces to me, I submit them to sta.sh and I send out the links to their partner. After that I will give send the links to the deviants who created them so they can read the critiques. This way they don't know who created the piece and maybe they are less intimidated by the deviant who created it. If it isn't obvious who created it. xD

Another option that I had in mind is that they create the pieces and submit them, I would collect them in a Journal and the deviants can decide for which piece they want to write a critique, but then they all could pick the same piece and the others wouldn't get one.

Your suggestion could also cause problems if a beginner would have to write a critique for an "expert" but then again it's not only about critiques it's about writing more than just awesome, everybody should be able to do that.

That's true :noes:

Thank you for your input :squee:

Whilst the stash concept is an interesting idea I can't say I'm keen on it. It would seem a shame if someone had to wait a month for permission to post their piece to dA as they could receive other feedback on it from random deviants outside of this project in the meantime. Equally they deserve to have the comment on their final piece, and not something in your stash where they could lose the link to it.

And whilst keeping the artist hidden may help in some cases, a lot of the advanced intimidating artists have very distinct styles so I'm not sure it would help too much.

I fear the same problem will come in the form of collecting them in a journal and asking for critiques. 9 times out of 10 people will always go for the ones that are easier to critique.

I guess that there may be an issue if a beginner is asked to comment on an advanced piece. Though if you sort out the assignments you could always tweak them a little so this is less of a risk. I think people who take part are generally looking for feedback and wont mind if the random order is manually changed in some areas to secure good critiques all around.

It's difficult to make everybody happy. xD

First of all we will have to see how many deviants will participate and who will participate if I am going to do it. :eager:

Thank you again :huggle:

Sounds like a excellent idea! And it's good that you can choose a list based on your skill level, because sometimes beginners just stand in awe in front of a piece of a far more advanced artist and wonder 'what to critique?', simply because they don't know it better ;)

I don't know yet, I thought we could have 3 lists (beginners, advanced, mixed) In case somebody doesn't want to critique the work of beginners or advanced Emoticonists. And a mixed list if they don't mind being paired with somebody who might be better.
