Emoticon News
2014 Emoticonist Advent Calendar InfoWelcome to the 2014 Emoticonist Advent Calendar!
:santa: This year, I volunteered to take over the project because Krissi001 discovered she was unable to due to time constraints.  Bear with me, as it's my first time organizing such a project. :slow:
:snowflake: What is an Advent Calendar?  An advent calendar depicts the 24 days in December ending on Christmas Day. :dummy:
:snowflake: Okay, so what's special about an Emoticonist Advent Calendar?  It's special because the calendar's days are filled with things made by anyone who makes emotes, or emoticons!
:snowflake: Who can sign up for this awesome project? Anyone who can create an emote!  Skill doesn't matter, but you must be willing to commit to the day you choose. :stare:
:snowflake: Will we be able to do animated entries?  As it's my first year and I'm quite unfamiliar with flash, thi
Emote Secret Santa 2014 - 1 day left to signup! What is Emote Secret Santa?
EmoteSecretSanta is a fun community project which runs each winter for the emote community. The aim of the project is to encourage emoticonists to make a special gift for a fellow community member and share some art around the holiday season.
How does it work?
Anyone interested in joining the project must send a note to the group (details below) before the sign up deadline.
Once the deadline has passed, each person will be assigned one emoticonist for whom them must make a themed emote gift. In return, they will receive an emote from someone else in the Secret Santa.
These gifts are made in secret, uploaded to Sta.sh and sent to the group via note. On Christmas day all of the gifts will be revealed in an article featured on EmoteSecretSanta.
Who can take part?
The Secret Santa is open to anyone who can make emoticons. It d
November NaNoEmo 2014November is approaching fast and Mirz123 and I are happy to announce that the November NaNoEmo will be running this year!
What is NaNoEmo?
NaNoEmo is a fun emoticon challenge hosted every November to match up with NaNoWriMo in the literature community. Over the last 3 years we have had a fair number of emoticonists taking part and some fantastic emotes appearing all through the designated month.
The main purpose of the challenge is to encourage emoticonists to make emotes throughout the month of November. The most common challenge undertaken is to make 30 emotes in 30 days, though others choose to set alternative targets which better suit their other commitments or art style.
Whilst our previous NaNoEmo event hosted earlier this year was restricted to only visual purpose emotes, the November event returns to the 'normal' format where any emote style is accepted. So it is completely up to you whether you o

My deviantART Story

Thu Aug 7, 2014, 1:37 PM
It all started when I was searching for wallpapers in 2005, I joined the Site to be able to Fav the deviations since I usually searched for them in school. :P
I wasn't an Artist and also not really interested in Art, I was more interested in Cars.
Dodge Charger by roobi

After a while I discovered more and more of deviantArt and my interest in Art started to grow,  I started to draw portraits and then I discovered the Emoticon Community and I learned how to create Emoticons. This was the time when I started to be active on dA and participated in the Community.  I met many incredible deviants in that time, sadly many of them aren't really active anymore. :c

But the most important part of my deviantArt story is meeting the love of my life. We had the first interaction in 2008 after I received my first DD for one of my Emotes. Our friendship grew over time and we already wanted to meet each other some years ago, but it somehow didn't happen. It was different this year, we finally met each other and we quickly fell in love with each other, it has been more than 2 months since we became a couple and I can't imagine to be without him ever again.  I love you silverhammer

News, Events and Art

Hai my dear watchers. :dummy:
I want to promote a few things in this Journal: ;D

First of all, please welcome the new Emoticon Community Volunteer - Waluigi-Prower :happybounce:

And here are more important Emoticon related Journals. :blowkiss:

Better Late than NaNano - VPNaNoEmoThe fun begins August 1st!!
Last year we ran a special NaNoEmo in June.  It was solely for Visual Purpose Emoticons. What does that mean? It means emoticons that are created to look at, not for use in chats or comments. Basically, pretty emoticon pictures. However, visual emotes can also include useful things like icons, stamps, etc. The key is that care is taken to create an emoticon "scene", usually with a detailed background.
I am gonna defer to the journal written last year by Synfull. It outlines what the challenge is about and how to participate. The good thing about VP NaNoEmo is that the goal is not one-a-day, but one-a-week, and smaller emote scenes (like avatars) count. So, get boned up, and if you're ready to participate, sign up.
Note that I know we're 2 months late, and notice of this is really last minute. My apologies. However, NaNo has always been a big motivator in the emoticon community and I hope it inspires a few old-timers, and newcomers, t
A Wild Challenge Appears! - FINAL DAY!I'd like to propose a challenge to the emoticon community: a 256x256 "high definition" emoticon. What does it look like? What style is it? Is it pixellized? Vectorized? Drawn?
Entries to this challenge should be submitted to the Visual Purpose Gallery, and then will be collected here.
Due Date: September 1st, 2014, 23:59 MDT (-06:00).
At the end of the challenge period, I'll post a poll (or journal) where members can vote for their favourites. The voting period will be two (2) weeks, and will end September 15th, 2014, 23:59 MDT (-06:00).
Incentives
First Place: 6 months premium membership (or 1272 points :points:).
Second Place: 3 months premium membership (or 636 points :points:).
Third Place: 1 month premium membership (or 396 points :points:).

Summer Contest and Mug Entry Closed! Winners Soon!July can be pretty hot and muggy here, and the same goes for August. So, we're doing something a little different. Muggy! is the theme for the rest of Summer (through August), and there are two ways to win something!
First, show me your emote enjoying (or enduring) the Summer heat. I'll pick three winners with prizes being $60, $35, and $20 worth of art for 1st, 2nd and 3rd!!
Second, make an emoticon mug! Use your drawing skills (doesn't need to be pixel) to create a "I Love Emoticons" mug! I'll select up to 10 entries for which the artist will receive a mug with their entry on it!

A few things to keep in mind: :faq132: :happybounce:

Emoticon Challenge? It appears our community is dying.
There. I said it. Between the smothering deluge of 'plz emoticons' invading our gallery and the giant lack of community spirit, the emoticons category seems to be dying, and fast. I myself don't think I've made more than 2 emotes since TheEMTC died in April. We need something, some prompt, to rekindle us. Maybe it's a shot in the dark, but it's worth trying.
So.... what are you gonna do about it?
I'm getting there, I'm getting there. I was thinking of hosting an emoticon challenge every week (or month, depending on what you guys feel would be best). No prizes, no pressure, just a prompt to keep our gears grinding, so to speak. But I need your support. After all, what's the point if no one wants to participate?
So what can I do?
:beerla: Promote, promote, promote! Nothing's gonna happen if no word gets around!

Something happened!

Thu Jun 12, 2014, 2:09 PM
Something of which I thought would never happen to me.

I fell in love.

:blushes:

As you know I have met silverhammer for the first time 3 weeks ago
(I can't believe it was just 3 weeks ago :faint:).
Since then we have met each other a few times more. :giggle:
(Which isn't normal for me since I'm pretty shy and I usually avoid meeting/talking to others.)

Meeting him was the best that happened in my life and I'm so glad I had the courage to meet him.  I can't explain how incredibly amazing he is. I feel so much more secure and confident when I am around him. I can be myself when I'm with him and I stop worrying about everything. It is always an amazing time when we see each other.

:iconsilverhammer::iconkrissi001:

I love you so much! :blushes:
I hope we can stay together for a long long time, I hope I never have to leave you. :smooch:

I can't say it often enough, I love you

The day of the Event has been changed.  It won't be on May 12,  it will be on the 2nd Saturday of May from now on (this year on May 10).  :dummy:

Events:
•Puzzle+Quiz.  I draw something and pieces of the drawing will be hidden on my account and in my Groups (maybe also side-accounts, I will mention on which accounts you will find something.)  These Puzzle pieces will link to sta.sh pages that contain an Emoticon Oc and you will have to guess who the owner of the OC is.

The puzzle itself is the main challenge, the oc guessing game is a bonus challenge.

•Emoticon Outline Challenge
I provide a few emoticon linearts, where you can only see the outline (:P). You have to take the outline and create a scene out of it, but you are not allowed to change the position of the lineart.

•Emoticon Challenges
I also thought about hosting small challenges on the day, where you have 1-2 hours to create your Emote. The Journals will be scheduled (they will posted every 1-2 hours) and to enter the challenge you have to post it within 2 hours on the journal.

There will be special badges for each Challenge.
There won't be Point Prizes, I want that deviants participate because they want to have some fun and not just to win a few points.

The Emoticon Appreciation day is in a few weeks  and I wanted to know what kind of Events you would like to see. Are there any Events from last year that you want to see again. Is there something you don't want to see?  Do you have any new ideas? :dummy:

1. I had the idea of an Emoticon/deviantArt related pictionary via livestream.  I would be drawing and the viewers have to guess what I am drawing.  The Chat would be on deviantArt.  I still have to test if it works at all.

It could work but I am way to nervous to do that :(   If you want to host the livestream event, go ahead!

Congrats! :boogie:

The Challenges will be on a small break, I want to focus on contest Entries and the Emoticon Appreciation Day.

Every 2 weeks there will be a new theme and different rules.
Even though this isn't a Contest there will be 3 winners and badges for all participants. The main goal is to challenge yourself. The winners will be chosen by the participants (by sending a note to me with their favourite entry, you can't vote for yourself. If nobody votes then there won't be a winner). The winner will chose the next theme and the new set of rules.
But I will be the host for the first 5 Challenges. (which means I will pick the rules/themes for the Challenges)

Theme:
"Book scenes"

You could pick any kind of book (comic book, instruction manual, novel, e-book etc.), pick a scene from the book and create an Emoticon for it.
In the description you would have to include which book you used and on which page you can find the scene.

Category: - Visual Purpose
Canvas size at least 70x40px / 40x70px
Post it in the Visual Purpose category.

Animation: - Optional.
You can decide if you want to create an animated or static Emoticon.

Deadline: - March 27 April 10- 10pm PDT
timeanddate.com/s/2kbb

BONUS CHALLENGES

Colours: - max 30:
To win the bonus Challenge you have to use less than 30 colours. Transparency not included.

Transparency: - No
To win the bonus Challenge you have to add a background to the Emoticon.

Frames - min 10 -  max. 40
To win the bonus Challenge you have to use more than 10 Frames and less than 40 Frames.

Send me a note with your Entry, include in the description that it is for this challenge.
If it fits to theme of other contests then you can enter them with your Emote as well.

You can enter as often as you want. :dummy:

Your piece needs at least 1 Emoticon. :slow:

It has to be a new Emoticon. (Created after the theme has been announced.)

For the first 5 Challenges, winners of the previous challenged can enter with their Emote as competing entry. As soon as the winner of the previous challenge will be the "host" of the new challenge they can enter as non-competing entry. They may decline to be the "host" of the Challenge, then I would be the "host".
In this case "host" means that they can pick the new theme and Rules but I would post the Journal.

Do you have any questions? :dummy:

How to help your community:

Sat Oct 5, 2013, 4:04 AM
The community seems to be dead? And you don't think you can do anything to help?

You are wrong!

Let me tell you, I often felt this way. I believed it was the end of the community but then deviants showed up and reanimated it. It wasn't completely fixed, but it was alive.

There are many things that you can do:  (in no particular order :P)

1. Write a Journal about the issue.
Don't be afraid to write a Journal if you feel there is something wrong with the community, maybe there are others who feel the same way, they might have been afraid to say something. You can work together to reanimate it.

2. Deviations and Comments
The deviations are the part that brought you together as a community, it is something that you all have in common. So, create more deviations! Others might get inspired and start to create some more as well.
And don't wait until others write comments on your deviation, it is important in a community to communicate. The others might think the same way and wait until you write a comment on their work.  In the end nobody will write comments and the community completely dies.  Be the first who breaks the circle and try to inspire others by writing comments on their work.

Are there still members who try to reanimate the community by writing News Articles or Features?  Write a Comment on their Journals and show them that you appreciate what they are doing. It feels incredible to see that others read your articles.

3. Projects
Another great way to reanimate the community is to create a Project. But it isn't enough to simply create a Project, you have to advertise it, don't wait until others find your project, you might have to wait your whole life for that.  Does your community have your own community volunteer? Yes? Great! You can ask them politely if they could advertise your Project, I am sure they will happily advertise it in their next Journal, they might also create something for it!
Your community doesn't have a community volunteer? Not a problem. Ask others that are part of the community if they might be interested if they want to join and if they could advertise it, but it is important how you ask. ;D

Are there still open Projects in the community? You should definitely join those as well. It doesn't help if everybody creates projects and don't join any other projects.

4. Contests
Are there still active Contests in the community? Did they get any Entries?   It is important in a community to help others in the community. Featuring their Contest in a Journal might reduce your chance to win the contest, but doesn't it feel better to win when more deviants entered the contest?
Is it really important what you can win? I don't think so! See it as a challenge to improve your skills and get inspired by the contest theme.

There aren't any contests in your community? Create your own!  It applies the same as for the Projects: "But it isn't enough to simply create a Contest you have to advertise it, don't wait until others find your Contest you might have to wait your whole life for that.  Does your community have your own community volunteer? Yes? Great! You can ask them politely if they could advertise your Contest I am sure they will happily advertise it in their next Journal, they might also create something for it!
Your community doesn't have a community volunteer? Not a problem. Ask others that are part of the community if they might be interested if they want to join and if they could advertise it, but it is important how you ask. ;D
"
You can also ask them if they could donate some small things for it, such as a Journal Feature or a small art request.

5. Tutorials
This might be something for more experienced members of the community. But even if you don't have that much experience, there are others who have even less experience than you, so they can still learn something new.

6. Features
It already helps if you showcase the deviations of others (Art deviations, News Articles, Projects, Contests even other Feature Articles). Show your watchers what is going on within the community, show them that it is awesome to be a part of it. They might want to join it. And there will be always deviants who are part of the community but they don't watch everybody of it, this way they will see when others host a contest/project.

7. Newcomer
We all have been at that point, the point were we just joined the community. The first step to join a community is to create deviations for it. That is what we all have in common.
You are a member of the community for a long time now?  Then you can make them feel welcomed by writing comments on their work. You can watch the newcomer and see how they improve as an Artist. You can also simply say "hey, welcome to our community, it is great to see a new face".

You are a newcomer and stumbled on this Article? You can also do many things for the Community, don't just simply wait until somebody discovers you.  Watch other deviants that are part of the community and talk to them. There will be a point where they check out your work and might also watch you. Enter contests and Projects. Thank others if they featured you in a Journal.

And most importantly: Don't give up and keep creating Art.

This is a Tutorial about how to get better results for the Community Emotes in the Emoticon tab in 'Add media'.
If you aren't familiar with the 'Add media'-sidebar yet, I suggest you read this tutorial before you move on:

Syn's guide to emotes in commentsFor years the dA community has been crying out for a way to use community made emoticons in comments all around dA. Whilst the Emoticon Legend offers a limited range of emotes, it is rarely updated with new emoticons and many of the emotes on there have become outdated. After several failed attempts at a revamped system, dA is starting to roll out an awesome new system for inserting community emoticons into comments.
Whilst this system has been in place on Sta.sh for a while now, it appears some people have missed it, so I thought I would throw together a short tutorial on the basics of the system. Along with community made emoticons, the new sidebar can be used to insert images from your own gallery and deviations from anywhere on dA. However, I will focus only on the emote side of things.
Step 1 - Add Media
When you click on the box to insert a new comment, there are now two options avail

There are different ways how to get more specific and maybe also better results in the Emoticons tab.
Keep in mind: only the Emotes are shown that are in the Chat friendly Emotes category and smaller than a certain size.

The Emoticons in your Favourites:

I heard that deviants have create a Folder in their Favourites for Chat friendly Emotes to have a quicker access to them, but there are a few problems with that:
  1. Only Premium Members have access to this tab.
  2. You are limited to 5 thumbs in your comment.
But there is another way to find the Chat friendly Emotes that you have in your Favourites!
    favby:username

For example: favby:krissi001

But it is a bit buggy, it somehow doesn't all show results when I use it (it used to show all results some time ago :paranoid:)  And it takes some time to load the results.    You should test it yourself, to see if it works for you.
Favby Search by Krissi001
-------------------------------------------
If this doesn't work for you then could use a more complicated way to use the Emotes from you favourites.
This is for those who have a Folder with Emotes they want to use in comments.

You have to go to this Folder and then you copy the thumbcodes of all Emotes you want to use one day.  You should copy them into a notepad file.     Each thumbcode in one line.

For example:
Here are the normal Thumbcodes of the Emoticons:
                       :thumb166116761:
                       :thumb168221760:
                      :thumb176172034:
                      :thumb181618879:
                      :thumb184100482:
                      :thumb189632816:

Now you simply have to replace  this:
   :thumb with  <da:emoticon id="
  and the last :   with " profile="deviation">

                      <da:emoticon id="166116761" profile="deviation">
                      <da:emoticon id="168221760" profile="deviation">
                      <da:emoticon id="176172034" profile="deviation">
                      <da:emoticon id="181618879" profile="deviation">
                      <da:emoticon id="184100482" profile="deviation">
                      <da:emoticon id="189632816" profile="deviation">

Then you could copy these codes into a sta.sh writer file for future reference.  You could sort them into different categories or just post them next to each other.  Here is how I did it:

Now I simply have to mark and copy the emote and paste it into the comment. :P
This also works for Emoticons that aren't in the chat friendly gallery (for example in visual purpose), but only if they are smaller than a specific size.   (and it only works in the emoticon category and its subcategories)

Searching by size:

I found the Emoticons, that you can find in the above sta.sh writer file, by using special search commands.
You can search by a specific width,  height or a combination of both.

width: 15   - shows all Emotes with a canvas  width of 15px,
height:15  -  shows all Emotes with a canvas  height of 15px,
15x15   -  shows all Emotes with the canvas height of 15px and a width of 15px.

This is a great way to find amazing chat friendly Emoticons, I found many emoticons that I wouldn't have found otherwise.
For example:

I used  width:34  and I found these Emotes: Must clean clean CLEAN     :cantsing:

I used  height:28  and I found these Emotes: :rainbowbounce: OHSHI-      :bloodyglomp:

I used  25x15  and I found these Emotes:       blue smiley big eeek  :cubesolved:

You can also combine these commands with keywords:  for example:
I used height:25  happy    and I found these Emotes:        :happy-wave:       :excited: revamp... again.

Searching by Emoticonist:

If you have Favourite Emoticonist and you want to use their Emoticons or you simply want to see which chat friendly Emotes they you could use this way.    If you don't know many Emoticonists you could take a look at the  Emoticonist Master list there you find tons of Emoticonists.
    by:username

For example: by:synfull
You will see all Emotes that she submitted to the Chat friendly Emotes Gallery.
By Username Search by Krissi001

You can also combine these commands with other search commands :  for example:
I used by:synfull  keywords:hug  and I see  all Emotes by Synfull which have  hug in the keywords.

Normally if you enter simple words in the search it searches in keywords, titles, descriptions and probably also usernames.  Which makes it difficult to find certain Emotes.  You can get better results if specify where the "keyword" should appear.
A good example of this is when you use the keyword thanks   You can find all kind of Emotes, because they might have Thanks for checking my work or something similar in their descriptions.

searching by title

 Example:
title:thanks     This just shows emoticons that have Thanks in their title.      :thanks: - Revamp             :thanks: revision              Thanks
It ignores deviations that have thanks in their description or in their keywords except if they also have it in their title. :P

searching by keywords

Example:
keywords:thanks   This just shows emoticons that have Thanks in their keywords.
It ignores deviations that have thanks in their description or in their title except if they also have it in their keywords. :P

using multiple search terms

If you are searching for a "thank you" emote but you don't know if they use thanks,  thank you  or thx  in their title.

Example:   title:thanks  OR title:thankyou OR title:thx OR title:"thank you"
This shows you Emoticons that have either thanks,  thankyou, thx, or the phrase "thank you" in their title.

More?

Those are the search methods that I like the most.  But there are more search commands that you can use, you can find them here:
And don't forget that you can combine different search commands. :dummy:

FAQ #577: How do I use the Search?

I hope this Article was at least a bit helpful. :noes:

Special search command

Here is a special search command which you can use to find Emotes that have been posted within a certain timeframe similar to 'Way back' but it is even better.   I found this in a forum post :shifty:

tsrange:ctime-mintime-maxtime:

mintime and maxtime are unix timestamps, use Unix Timestamp Converter to get the timestamps you want.
You can use it this to find Emoticons that have been submitted in  certain timeframe. But I am not sure how the different timezones affect those timestamps. :P

For example if you want to see the chat friendly Emoticons that have been submitted between January and March in 2007
you would have to type:  tsrange:ctime-1167602400-1175378399:   (I have to say that I used my timezone GMT+2 to get those dates)
