Bounceemotes Icon by Krissi001 Bounceemotes Icon by Krissi001
<edit>It was bothering me that it wasn't bouncy enough that's why I added some more bounces :happybounce: </edit>

This is my entry for the #BounceEmotes icon Contest :boogie:
I had to add a background to stay below the 30kb :grump:
(45 Frames 62 Frames, 32 colours)

I am so limited as to what I can do with avatars because the animation/optimization programs I use keep me at about 12 frames for small avatars and 20 or so for large ones. I'd love to see a tutorial of your method as well, if only for gaining more frames/shrinking file size.

It is the first time in years that I created an icon. It actually surprised me that I could add so many frames. I think the main factor to keep a small file size is to use few colours.
I actually don't know why the transparent background effects the file size so heavily.
The file with the background and a few transparent pixels: 29.4 KB (32 colours)
The file with a solid background: 29.3 KB (31 colours)
The file without a background: 46.5 KB (30 colours)
Now if I am going to reduce the colours of this deviation with photoshop let's say to 12 it would look a bit weird(since the program reduces the colours) but it would have a filesize of 23,8kb and I could add 18 more frames to the animation till I have 30kb.
If you want to check how many colours your image has you should go to [link]
My bases are made out of 5 colours and when I add the face I usually pick the colours that are already there (In the past I used a transparent white for the bright spots around the eyes which adds to the colour count as well)

Which programs are you using again? (i know that you told me once what you are using but I forgot it D: )
You could get photoshop cs2, they had to deactivate the licensing server for it and you can download the program from their website [link] (even though it was intended just to be for those who bought it before, you can read about it here -> [link])
I downloaded Illustrator CS2 from there ( it works like a charm)

I use PaintShop Pro 14 to draw. I can get a color count from it for each frame. Because I draw each frame in layers I have to "Save Copy As" a .gif, go back and set the transparency if necessary, then combine the files with UnFREEze. I'll tweak the frame rates with Microsoft GIF Animator sometimes.

When I opened this, I noticed it is only drawing the changes in each frame (often a smaller image placed at a specific location), not the whole image. I'm not sure how to do that, or what software is able to do that for me. I'll check out the other software you mentioned when I get a chance. Thanks!:tighthug:

That sounds complicated D:

Could you show me a screenshot of that?
I just use one program where I can use layers and add animation. Maybe it looks like that because I often reuse Layers? If I would remove the bases from the first layer it would look like this: [link] (it effects the first 27 frames, then I used different bases)
I often use the first Emote as a reference, at first I create the animation for that Emote. Then I duplicate the layer for each frame and copy it as often as I need it, then I just have to move it to the correct position and change the colours (then I have to duplicate it again or it moves back to the old position when I change the frame). I often have just 1 layer for the face when I am working on the animation and at the end I check each frame and if necessary I copy the layer and remove some parts of the face. here is an example of the first Emote, it shows how often I reuse the layers. This is my current project (small one as time is limited for art right now). For this one I did the bar animation (background) first, so I know how many frames I'm working with (81), and currently going back over them and adding the emote. After that I'll go back and change the expressions. Normally I complete each frame as an image before doing the next, but the background animation had to be worked out first to properly loop. These are all .psp files, which will be converted to .gif when I'm happy with the animation. The background color will become transparent as well, which I'll have to set for each .gif image when they are made. I select all the .gif images and drag them to UnFREEze to create the actual animated file. This is why things take me so long to create. :giggle:

Now I admire your Emotes even more, I don't think I would be patient enough to create them this way D:

:aww: Thanks! It's pretty easy to go back and modify them though, with each frame saved as a separate layered image.
